Cheryl Polote Williamson: African-American Now A Traditional Ghanaian Queen

African-American philanthropist Dr. Cheryl Polote Williamson has been enstooled as a traditional Queen Mother in Ghana, receiving the name **Nana Aba Kwekuwah Somah I** and taking on a new leadership role in the Abura Odonase traditional area of Ghana’s Central Region.

The September 2026 ceremony marked a significant milestone in her growing relationship with Ghana and the African diaspora. The Anona Royal Family enstooled her as **Queen Mother of Development**, a role focused on supporting community development and creating opportunities for women, children, and young people.

But this honour goes beyond a royal title. Williamson presented a 12-point development plan that includes renovating a village school and advancing plans for an information and communications technology (ICT) centre. Her nonprofit, Soul Reborn, has also supported children and young people through the distribution of sanitary products and Liberty Cards.

Before her enstoolment, Williamson was appointed the Ghana Tourism Federation’s Tourism Ambassador for Diaspora Affairs. She also led a delegation of 20 American women to Ghana to explore business opportunities, cultural heritage, tourism, and investment. According to the announcement, the delegation contributed more than $200,000 to Ghana’s local economy during its seven-day visit.

In this video, discover who Cheryl Polote Williamson is, how she became a traditional Queen Mother in Ghana, what her new title means, and how she plans to use her influence to strengthen connections between Ghana and Black communities in the United States.

Her story highlights the growing relationship between Africa and its diaspora, showing how cultural reconnection can create opportunities for business, philanthropy, education, and community development.
