British singer and actress FKA twigs has been cast to play legendary performer and activist Josephine Baker in an upcoming feature film directed by Maïmouna Doucouré and supported by Baker’s estate.
Josephine Baker was far more than an entertainer. She became one of the first Black women to achieve international film stardom, rise to global celebrity status, and build a career entirely on her own creative control during an era where opportunities for Black women were extremely limited.
Her influence stretched beyond entertainment. During World War II, Baker worked with the French Resistance, using her fame as cover to pass intelligence and support Allied efforts. She risked her life while continuing to perform on some of the world’s biggest stages.
Even after achieving international recognition in France, Baker faced discrimination and surveillance in the United States, where she was blacklisted for her activism and outspoken stance on civil rights. Despite this, she remained committed to equality and justice, later becoming the only official female speaker at the 1963 March on Washington alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Now, decades later, her story is being revisited for a new generation through film, sparking renewed conversations about legacy, representation, and how Black women have shaped global culture long before modern celebrity icons.
